4B). The HVOF (Fig. 4E, F) coatings have a different microstructure compared to the HVSFS and APS deposited coatings. The coatings consist of unmelted submicron size particles and well flattened lamellae. The unmelted submicron particles (Fig. 4E) originate from the crystallites of the raw powder material. Due to the lower flame temperature of the HVOF, compared to the plasma jet of APS, a significant percentage of the HAp grains did not melt during the HVOF spraying. These porous grains of the raw powder feedstock break up into the earlier mentioned crystallites, and adhere on the coating surface, which are detected by SEM (Fig.
Coatings deposited using DEG-based suspensions are richer in crystalline hydroxyapatite than those obtained using water-based suspensions (Fig. 5).
